The Surface Effect Catamaran (SECAT) incorporates the use of two high length-to-beam (L/B) Surface Effect Ship (SES) platforms to support a low L/B ship. It offers total drags which are comparable with High L/B SES's and the high roll stability normally associated with low L/B SES's. The increase in roll stability enables cushion height to be increased for the SECAT relative to the Low and HigK L/B SES's; therefore, improving seakeeping and reducing slam loadings. Results show that the SECAT concept offers the possibility of replacing ships in the present day fleet with small ships without loss of existing operational flexibility and payload and without substantially increasing the production costs over existing ships.
