The degree of flight inflow simulation achieved during static engine testing with an inflow control structure (ICS) installed was experimentally assessed. This was done using blade mounted pressure transducers and hot wire anemometry. The program involved two JT9D static engine test programs conducted with Pratt and Whitney Aircraft and Boeing inflow control structures. These static data are compared with data obtained during a flight test using the same JT9D engine on a Boing 747 airplane. Results are presented that show the inflow control structures provide a substantial reduction in the level of steady and unsteady inflow distortion, and JT9D flight inflow characteristics are approximated well except in the inlet wall boundary layer region.
