The Nuclear Regulatory Commission requires that Seismic Category I systems and their components be designed to withstand the effects of the Safe Shutdown Earthquake plus other dynamic loads. The safety related ductwork of a Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning System (HVAC) is an example of one such system that is required to meet these design requirements in selected areas within a nuclear plant. The existing industry standards and codes do not specifically address the design requirements for circular HVAC ducts in nuclear service. Therefore, an extensive study was undertaken to propose an acceptable criteria for the structural design of circular stainless and carbon steel HVAC ductwork, develop a design approach without requiring a detailed analysis of each duct system and analytically verify the design procedure using a computer analysis. This paper summarizes the findings of this study which involved the application of engineering judgment to available test results as reported in the literature. (Peters)
