A technology-oriented survey of several recent and ongoing development and demonstration projects involving liquid hydrogen containers for fuel-system service in highway transportation systems has been conducted. In addition to providing technical coverage of those involved research and development organizations in the United States and overseas (namely in Japan and the Federal Republic of Germany), projected container system production cost information provided by several U.S. cryogenic vessel manufacturers is included. Also, a unique semiautomatic liquid hydrogen 'service station' developed in Germany is described as a third aspect of this subject. The paper concludes with a general assessment of the state of technology of vehicle hydrogen containers and associated systems, including the identification of 'pacing items' recommended to be addressed initially in prospective R and D activities in this field.
