The suitability of a number of rotary mechanisms for potential use as 200-atmosphere (3000 pounds per square inch) oilfree shipboard air compressors was investigated. The structural, operational, and manufacturing limitations were analyzed and the expected efficiencies calculated. The Zimmern single-screw compressor appears to be a feasible and technically attractive candidate, especially if water-lubricated bearings are employed. All other mechanisms were judged to be unsuitable for the required service or to require the development of technology well beyond that which is now available. (Se)
