Computer methods for parametrically synthesizing airplane design and performance are abundantly available and in use by industry and the military. Years of program developments, method sophistications, and the addition of comprehensive merit function evaluations have further complicated the already complex airplane design problem. Increased complexity means higher computing cost, higher engineering costs, and a general lack of management visibility into the conceptual design cycle. This paper describes an approach in use by Boeing Military Airplane Development which not only improves computation efficiency but also provides an increased analysis capability along with improved design visibility. The paper briefly describes the steps which lead to the new method, and then demonstrates the important features of the method with an example problem. (DePo)
