With combustion engines for altering directions of rotation and particularly with diesel engines employed in ship drives, where the cooling water for the removal of engine heat is circulated by means of pumps driven by the crankshaft, mostly via intermediate gears, it is vital that the cooling water be delivered uninfluenced by the crankshaft's direction of rotation. A delivery independent of the direction of rotation can be achieved by the use of a radial blade impeller combined with a succeeding annular casing, a design which also meets the demands for simplicity and low susceptibility to trouble. As compared to a conventional impeller of optimum design, the above version involves certain unfavourable flow and energy transfer conditions which result in a lower overall efficiency and higher NPSH reg values.
