Under programs sponsored by the Air Force Materials Laboratory, Northrop Corporation has developed a unique material and characterized the process by which an organic resin can be electrodeposited on conductive adherends such as aluminum or graphite. The resultant coatings of primer are compatible with state-of-the-art adhesives which cure at 250 F, and also with aircraft paint primers and aircraft topcoats. The process deposits a corrosion inhibiting primer film which has uniform thickness, no pin-holes and can be cured in 30 minutes at 220 F. The film thickness is automatically controlled by the voltage applied to the work piece and is independent of operator control. The primer film is applied to all metallic surfaces, including recessed areas, all sides, cut-outs and hidden areas. Tensile lap-shear and T-peel strengths of electroprimed specimens bonded with FM-73 adhesives are equivalent to or better than the strengths typical of specimens bonded with BR-127 primer and FM-73 adhesive.
