The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been doing diesel characterization work for the last several years. The work is done jointly by the Office of Mobile Source Air Pollution Control (OMSAPC) in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the Office of Research and Development (ORD) in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Most of this work is done through EPA contracts with Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in San Antonio, Texas. The first contract involves testing two light duty diesels (a VW Rabbit and Mercedes 24OD) on five different fuels to see how fuel parameters affect particulate emissions. The second contract involves testing an Oldsmobile and VW Rabbit diesel along with their gasoline counterparts. This contract also involves testing several heavy-duti diesel engines and one heavy-duty gasoline engine. Included in the heavy-duty diesel engine work is an investigation of how various parameters (injection timing, EGR, etc.,) affect particulate emissions. Future work is planned to continue to investigate the effects of fuel parameters on light duty diesel particulate emissions.
