The Reaction Control System for the Inertial Upper Stage utilizes hydrazine monopropellant, six pairs of reaction control thrusters, three spherical positive expulsion propellant tanks and associated isolation valves, fill and drain valves and manifolding. The design of the thrusters and propellant tanks are based on existing equipment and the remaining components are space-proven items. All components are located in the IUS Avionics Bay surrounding the upper dome of the second stage solid roclet motor. The Reaction Control System operational requirements include orienting the vehicle prior to solid rocket motor firings, roll control during the motor firings, vernier corrections for motor impulse variations, attitude control and maneuvering during transfer orbit coast period, payload spinup if required and attitude control and maneuvering after payload separation.
