Two prototype titanium heat exchangers have been designed and manufactured. Techniques have been established to machine, well and inspect titanium. Comprehensive tests have been carried out under laboratory conditions on one heat exchanger whilst the other has been proved in service. Marine fouling and corrosion tests have been carried out to compare the effects on titanium and non-ferrous materials of seawater treated by sacrificial aluminium/copper anodes and by chlorination antifouling systems. Results show that the antifouling systems gave complete protection against marine fouling and that the titanium specimens were in the same condition as installed. The nonferrous materials showed varying degrees of corrosion from slight to extensive. (Wassmann)
