In order to construct and operate seawater systems with a minimum of maintenance and downtime, it is necessary to treat the system as a whole. Materials must be selected which are not only suitable for individual components but compatible with other parts of the system. This paper considers the corrosion behaviour of various materials commonly used for seawater service, such as carbon steel, cast irons, copper base alloys and stainless steels and discusses how these are used in seawater systems. Although heat exchanger tubing is the key component in most systems, the emphasis will be on components such as piping, valves and pumps as failures in these components are often the cause of expensive maintenance and down-time.
