The continuous need for reducing manufacturing costs and developing lighter weight designs provides the basis for an increased interest in the usage of aluminum in non-aircraft fluid power systems. In applications where relative motions are encountered, a special wear resistant coating is required. Several techniques that have been used in the aerospace industry are discussed. These including plating, hard anodizing, plasma flame spraying, and steel sleeving. Each surface is described in terms of specific design criteria, processing, applications, limitations, and service experience. (DePo)
