In the development of a wheel balancer for automative and light truck tires, a series of three prototype models were constructed and tested. Each successive model performed less well than the previous, and the third prototype yielded no information which could be used to determine balance correction weights. The suspension system of the balancer shaft consisted of pairs of double cantilever flexures upon which foil strain gages were mounted to sense unbalance forces. A computational package within the balancer used equations to calculate correction weights based upon the assumption that the suspension system qualified as the Class IV hard-bearing balancing machine. Consequently, an analysis was performed using a mathematical model to explain why the machine performance was unacceptable. A fundamental conflict was discovered in the balancer design: a high suspension stiffness was required to achieve satisfactory accuracy but the strain level from this suspension was unacceptably low.
