The age of the Shuttle centered Space Transportion System (STS) will arrive in 1980, after completion of the Shuttle test and verification program. The Spacelab, which will be prime carrier for flight payloads in the decade of the 80's, is composed of two major systems. The most important for the Life Sciences community is the long pressurized module (5.4 m in length and 4.1 m in diameter). The second system is the pallet which is usually used in trains of up to five pallets, each of which is 3 m long. In preparation for the Life Sciences Flight Programing using the STS, in 1975, the NASA Office of Life Sciences released An Invitation to Participate in Planning the NASA Life Sciences Program in Space. Over 1700 responses from the life sciences community were received and analyzed. These responses helped NASA to identify potential requirements from the Life Sciences Experiments equipment (called Common Operations Research Equipment, or CORE) for the shuttle payloads. In addition they also provided a base for the selection of scientists to participate on the several peer panels for review of the proposals for scientific merit. (Kursetz)
