Major components and subsystems for the Advanced Space Engine are undergoing technology development and demonstration under NASA-Lewis Research Center contracts to establish the technology base for an advanced, high-performance, reusable, long-life engine for application such as the manned Orbit Transfer Vehicle. The 20000-pound-thrust, oxygen/hydrogen Advanced Space Engine technology development and demonstration status are described in this paper. Engine performance is maximized by use of a 2000-psia staged-combustion cycle and a 400/l expansion-area-ratio nozzle. Testing of the major components of the engine has been accomplished and the results are presented. The testing includes the turbopumps and the combustion system components. Recent results of testing the complete combustion system with the 400:1 nozzle extension, resulted in a measured specific impulse value of 478 seconds. Component demonstration effort is continuing and plans for system technology development and demonstration are in process and discussed in the paper. (Kursetz)
