This paper presents performance results from a first phase in the development of a 150 kW Stirling engine intended for marine, industrial and medium duty automotive applications. A further step in the improvement of the efficiency is outlined. This second phase in the development requires increased heater temperatures and thus more advanced heat resistant materials. Fuel economy is presently a major objective in the development of new engines and it is shown how it can be obtained in the Stirling engine without impairing the already evaluated and reported environmental properties. Fuel versatility is one of the factors in fuel economy. It is indicated how Stirling engines can profit from their fuel tolerance by using fuels which cost less and which require less energy for their refinement. It is finally shown in an example what overall operating costs can be expected of a Stirling engine vehicle under varying driving conditions. For this example an intracity and short haul delivery truck has been selected operating according to a characteristic driving cycle. (Kursetz)
