Recent studies have shown that erection and assembly of future large space structures will require extensive extravehicular activity (EVA). To fully utilize EVA as a viable capability in future space efforts, protective systems must be developed which not only provide near shirtsleeve mobility at higher suit pressures, but they must also be extremely reliable, long-lived, and cost effective. Space suit assemblies developed in the past provide candidate concepts to meet future EVA requirements. The development of an 8-psi suit assembly at Ames Research Center incorporates the most recent refinements in available technology. Development efforts are continuing and concentrating on low cost manufacturability and cycle-life testing of all candidate joint concepts. (Peters)
