Consumer and environmental movements are creating a condition in which a manufacturer is liable for the safety of this products as long as they last. This imposes in the design engineer a requirement to make design decisions such that they can be justified in court. It is suggested that simulation of a product operating in its intended environment provides the designer with a tool for detecting areas in need of product improvement and for evaluating and justifying design decisions on a rational basis. An example is provided by the first-phase analysis of a military vehicle, the Army's M113A1 Armored Personnel Carrier (APC). (Kursetz)
