Increasing performance requirements have escalated the cost of recent tactical aircraft. Reducing the cost of future aircraft requires accurate evaluation of interactions between performance capability, life cycle cost, and weapon system effectiveness early in the development cycle. This necessitates consideration of a large matrix of candidate systems and, thus, requires a systematic and economical procedure for design selection. An approach for engine selection has been developed which considers these interactions in conjunction with mission and armament requirements and projected threat. This paper discusses the engine selection procedure and presents typical results. Procedures for incorporation of early predictions of engine life and usage impact on total system life cycle cost are also discussed.
