The paper describes the theoretical and experimental analysis on shrink-fit connection of built-up crankshaft. The analysis has been conducted by the Semi-built-up Crankshaft Research Committee of the Ship-Machinery Manufacturers' Association of Japan, in order to establish a new design standard which is more suitable for modern high powered two stroke cycle marine diesel engine. Theoretical analysis consists of finite element method applied to evaluate stresses resulted from shrink-fit and temperature variation in process of shrink-fit. Experimental analyses deal with tests on photoelastic model, measurement of temperature variation in process of shrink-fit and twisting tests of shrink-fitted model crankshafts under static and reciprocal twisting loads. A new draft proposal to calculation of shrink-fit crankshaft is deduced from the analyses.
