The paper addresses control of bilge wastes and ballast wastes. The system of bilge oily waste treatment described incorporates two or more oil water separators and the necessary pumps, tanks, and piping to make effective use of them. Means of reducing the volume of oil and water allowed to enter the bilge are suggested as effective measures for reducing the necessary flow capacity of separators and for extending system life. Segregated ballast systems are considered the cleanest, but other ballast pollution control systems also are discussed. A particularly challenging ballast feature of some ships of the U.S.Navy is their compensated fuel system, which fills fuel tanks with ballast water at the same rate as fuel is used. The paper describes measures taken to attain acceptable discharge concentrations. Preliminary results of U.S.Navy oil pollution testing programs in current progress show good promise of overcoming pollution hazards.(Wassmann)
