In order to set the frame-work for this presentation, the paper starts with a brief outline of the present competitive position of the slow-speed two-stroke cycle marine Diesel engine if compared with steam- and gas turbine plants of the sample power level. The question is then being raised, by what means the Diesel engine could possibly maintain or even enlarge its economic superiority in the light of the announced developments of its competitors. The answer given to this question is quite affirmative, involving 3 to 4 steps, depending on the actual case and yielding a combined improvement in fuel consumption from 24 to 35 g/kWh. It is further pointed out that these gains are obtained without exceeding presently accepted pressure levels on the main engine, utilizing in the propulsion plant largely proven technology, which is already available, and enhancing at the same time the reliability of the entire plant. Finally, some specific measures to further improve the practical performance of the latest SULZER engine designs are being mentioned. (Wassmann)
