Developments aimed at the propulsion of ships in the 1980's must include considerations of the challenging environment that can be anticipated then in afterwards. Energy conservation will pervade every decision the shipbuilder, owner and operator makes relative to design and operation of ships. Steam propulsion equipment and systems are being studied and designed today to meet the many challenges of the 1980's. The General Electric Company, USA, in cooperation with the Maritime Administration of the US Department of Commerce and other steam plant component suppliers, has recently completed a design study of an advanced reheat marine steam propulsion plant that is in every way responsive to the anticipated demands of the applications mentioned. This paper reviews in detail the results of that design study, and demonstrates the continuing versatility of steam plant designers in responding with the right solution at the right time, whatever the challenge.
