Subcritical cracking due to stress corrosion and hydrogen-stress cracking of steel weldments in the yield strength range of 100 to 200 ksi is an area of concern regarding the integrity of high performance marine structures. The origin of a new U.S. Navy technology development program on subcritical cracking of steel weldments is described. The metallurgical variables concepts being considered are identified and the current plans for achieving the program objectives are outlined.
