The Kilowatt Isotope Power System (KIPS) utilizes an organic Rankine conversion cycle to produce electrical power from the heat of Pu-238 fueled radio-isotope heat source. KIPS is designed to provide electrical output power in the range of 500 to 2000 watts for earth orbit satellites and interplanetary space probes. These are three in-series heat source assemblies in the nominal 1300 W(e) KIPS. Each heat source assembly consists of one multi-hundred watt (MHW) isotope heat source, a boiler fin tube assembly, heat source mounting structure, housing and insulation provisions. Nuclear safety considerations require that the MHW heat source temperatures be maintained within narrow limits for normal operation and all credible accident conditions. This paper describes the development of an Emergency Cooling System (ECS) based on melting multifoil insulation. The ECS maintains MHW heat source temperatures within acceptable upper and lower limits for all conditions including the most severe malfunction, a loss of coolant accident.
