Development of the multistage centrifugal pump in recent years has given pump designers a much greater in-depth knowledge of the nature and magnitude of the forces arting on a pump rotor. This has led to the establishment of techniques which permit an accurate assessment of the response of the rotor to these forces to be made. Methods of accessing these forces and the corresponding design criteria for sizing pump shafts and bearings are described. Four principal types of centrifugal pump used in offshore oil production installtions are reviewed. Illustrations are given of the manner in which recent developments in component design and design methods have been incorporated, with the aim of providing maximum pump availability.
