Dr. J.D. Smith and Dr. M.W. Salzar have implemented a simple mathematical model of an automobile gear box on a real time analog computer in the Cambridge University Engineering Department, which produces a noise frequency spectrum comparable with that measured on a real gear box. A tape recording will be played showing how the noise alters as the type of tooth error is changed. This paper gives a critical assessment of our knowledge of the relationship between noise, design variables, and manufacturing errors in gears. A rational physical explanation is given which unifies most of the published experimental work, as well as some unpublished work presented here.
