The undersea environment poses a unique threat to man. The thermophysical properties of the surrounding water promote the draining of vital body heat through the usual mechanism of convection from the man/water interface. In addition, the enhanced heat capacity and thermal conductivity of the compressed breathing gas greatly multiply the heat lost through respiration. The various U.S. Navy developmental programs that relate to these serious problems have been brought together in the diver thermal protection (DTP) program at the Naval Costal System; Laboratory (NCSL) in Panama City, Florida. Brief descriptions of the many developments being undertaken, results of thesting programs to date, and plans for the future are presented.
