A process is described where a noncondensable gas is used as a semi-permeable membrane. Saline and condensata water films are imbedded in porous media and kept at suction pressures relative to the gas membrane. Distances between each pair of water films can thus be kept extremely small and permit rapid distillate transfer by diffusion through the gas film. Thermodynamic driving potentials are created by pressure or temperature differences. The sets of equations governing a model of these diffusion stills are solved and distillate rates computed. By means of non-equilibrium thermodynamics, minimum available energy requirements are determined.
