Currently available microcontrollers having microprocessor, ROM, RAM and input/output circuits on the same chip can only handle 8 bits. These do not have the performance to meet the demands of either current or future car electronic needs. The use of National Semiconductor's 16 bit HPC 16040 allows the design of systems for engine control, as well as for transmission, drive, anti-lock braking and also for multiplexing. For future use additional functions will be integrated into the HPC family to allow the solution of the future problems. The application of microcontroller in engine control is discussed in some detail, and the design of such a system is examined using block circuit diagrams. An outline of the use of microcontrollers in other ways is given.
