The microprocessor-aided inspection system (SIAM) developed by Aerospatiale for crack detection in riveted and bonded sheet metal is described. Cracks which exceed 2mm are detectable by the eddy-current method, and low-frequency rotary ultrasonic transducers without liquid coupling are used to check the linear bonding. The inspector carries a lightweight equipment in which an Apple II microcomputer takes care of four-channel eddy-current data acquisition, ultrasonic feeler positioning, channel calibration, data display and storage on a 10-megabyte disc (with capacity for test results from seven complete airframes). Extension of the concept to composite materials is discussed with application to carbon fibre reinforced epoxy skins held together by glued stiffeners; an array of eight 10 MHz transducers is used with a partial immersion system, and an interactive keyboard and menu display. Time savings of the order of 80% in comparison with manual inspection are claimed.
