The authors report on the status of the survey jointly carried out by RATP, SNCF and a group of railway engineers to develop a new system to assist train driving. The first scheduled application is for equipment on the trains which will be operating on the Paris RER line A in 1987. The main feature of this equipment is, the wide use of microprocessors to perform railways functions safely. The authors describe the modularity flexibility and maintainability aspects of this new equipment. It has been designed to fulfil new operational needs, from the fully unmanned driving of the train to a punctual speed limitation device, and to match a wide range of rolling stock and wayside equipment, while remaining competitive.
