Queensland Railways are proceeding with the electrification of the main routes in Central Queensland hauling coal from the Bowen Basin coal mining areas to the ports at Gladstone and Hay Point and Dalrymple Bay south of Mackay. The traction system is supplied from 132/50 kV single phase transformers at thirteen supply points. The 132 kV short circuit level at some supply points may be below 300 MVA while single phase loads may reach short duration peaks of 20 to 40 MVA. The opportunities for phase balancing are limited and negative phase sequence voltages could occur used for rotating machines. Static Var Compensator (SVCs) are to be installed at nine locations to reduce to the unbalance caused by the traction loads. Harmonic filters are required to absorb harmonic currents from both the thyristor controlled locomotives and the thyristor controlled reactors in the SVCs. The planning of these electricity supply facilities is described.
