The author describes a radio frequency chamber built by IBM at its Owego, NY, facility for the LAMPS Mk III anti-submarine warfare system. The RF chamber is the first of its kind to be used for ground acceptance tests of production-line avionics. As well as cutting the time of preproduction acceptance level testing, other problems typically confronted in avionics tests that have been alleviated or significantly reduced as a direct result of the RF chamber include: the electromagnetic environment; security/crypto tests; testing in daylight hours only; preparation time; recoup from failures; and safety.
