The question whether the automated system of the future should serve as the human pilot's assistant, or vice versa, is considered. The authors consider whether the quantity and nature of pilot error have been altered by technology and increased automation. Attention is also given to the question of whether system designers should automate by replacing or by enhancing pilot performance. Finally, the problems that remain to be surmounted in achieving the goals of high performance and high system reliability are considered. It is concluded that total automatic control will be neither technically feasible nor socially acceptable during the next major stage of aircraft automation. Partially autonomous systems, however, may lead to better pilot-system performance levels and enhanced pilot acceptance.
