Traction drives have been around for a long time but have not made a major impact on the power transmission industry. The main obstacle to their increased use has been a lack of confidence in the fact that two smooth rollers can transmit force through a fluid. However, the 'mental block' to using traction drives appears to be dissipating, aided by the fact that design changes have improved capabilities. These advances, combined with ease of maintenance are making traction drives formidable competitors to conventional adjustable-speed drives.
