A problem of full rank output synthesis of a modal regulator that shifts the system spectrum to assigned points of the complex plane and minimizes an assigned quadratic quality criterion is solved. It is solved by an iterative procedure that uses the direction of the gradient of the quality criterion with respect to the free parameters of the gain matrix of the regulator. Necessary conditions for the existence of a minimum are derived. As an example, synthesis of a regulator that stabilizes the lateral motion of an aircraft is examined.
