In 1983 SNCF decided to adopt the self-commutated synchronous motor for the next generation of high-powered electric locomotives and TGV trains. This decision followed a two-year development programme culminating in the celebrated tests of March 16, 1983 during which BB10004 demonstrated its ability to haul both heavy freight and fast passenger trains. Two prototype locomotives will enter service shortly, and a series order for 44 was placed in July 1983. Known as Sybic, the BB26000 class will retain the successful monomotor bogie now used under 485 electric locos built for SNCF in the last 10 years.
