The mission analysis studies have revealed the following two major families of needs to be satisfied by remote operation: - the intervention, repair and maintenance needs; - the deployment, assembly and construction needs. The article describes the application field of remote operation in space and presents several existing or projected systems that illustrate the advantages of remote operation whether a human operator is aboard the spaceship or not. The specific constraints to the space exploration field have led the CNES to set up a research activity whose first phase is now under way based on the hypothesis of an operator on the ground.
