Using radio in place of track conductors could reduce the cost of providing continuous communication with moving trains. Experiments have been carried out to determine whether a 40 GHz line-of-sight radio link can be used to carry the data needed for German Federal Railway's LZB train control. The experiments were technically successful. Radio could be used in future as 200 km/h running is extended, provided the ratio of mobile to trackside equipment is favourable, or the need for full compatibility with the existing LZB on-train equipment is relaxed.
