The US Navy's contributions to space science and technology are reviewed. Primary areas of current activity include command, control, and communication, navigation, and the collection of environmental information. The authors present arguments for an increased level of Navy involvement in future Department of Defense space activities. As viewed by Navy decision-makers, this increased level of involvement will be selective, emphasizing space research and development and operations that are considered vital to Navy interests. Potential thrusts may include space-based radars and infrared sensors for surveillance, blue-green laser satellite communications for strategic connectivity, and multisensor spacecraft (synthetic-aperture radars, passive microwave/millimeter-wave radiometers, radar altimeters) for environmental monitoring of global ocean areas.
