Honeywell's helicopter automatic targeting system is undergoing tests to prove the tactical utility of automatic target recognition (ATR) for US Army attack helicopters. The program attempts to prove that the ATR and the crew member working together are more effective than the crew member working alone. The ATR is intended to find targets faster, identify which targets should be attacked first, and keep track of several targets in the field of view. This should allow the helicopter to minimize dangerous exposure time and launch more weapons in shorter time than possible without automation.
