Opportunities to practice combat-related skills are often limited for the Navy during peacetime. In addition, traditional classroom methods may not be appropriate for such skill training. Microprocessors, used at remote sites such as on ships, however, seem well suited for delivery of initial and refresher training because of their capabilities in providing simulation and extensive drill and practice. The research reported here represents a five-year effort investigating this possibility with Electronic Counter Measures (CEM) recognition skills. Efforts to initiate remote-site testing and the determination of refresher training intervals are described. Microprocessor-based Basic and Advanced ECM training was tested using over 200 students at a fleet school. The training was implemented in three courses for Operations Specialists (OSs), using integrated videotaped examples of ECM and dynamic graphics. The results showed statistically significant improvement in recognition as measured by a pretest-posttest design. Long-term skill retention was measured when possible, and results showed no decline in performance. It was concluded, therefore, that this training concept was a promising one and should be investigated further.
