Conventional media (e.g. print-based) job performance aids, have been developed to help soldiers remember complicated military procedures. The purpose of the present research was to develop a computer-based job aid from a previously developed print-based aid and to compare task performance of soldiers using the two kinds of aids. Twenty-eight soldiers were given two trials on each of two tasks, on each job aid. One task was comparatively simple, with only one branch, while the other was more complicated, requiring extensive embedded branching. Results indicated that the computer-based aid produced more accurate performance on the first trial of the simpler task. No differences, however, were observed for the more complicated task. Nevertheless, 21 soldiers (75%) preferred the computer-based to the print-based aid. The results were discussed in terms of experience, motivation, and task factors which may impact the relative effectiveness of computer-based and print-based job performance aids.
