The latest series of trams (the 3000 series) at present in service in The Hague is a doubly-articulated vehicle designed for a large passenger capacity and for optimum adaptation to modern city traffic. The favourable experience which has been gained using the chopper technique from the point of view of energy consumption, maintenance and starting and braking flexibility has resulted in the decision by the HTM (The Hague Tramway Company) to use this design in all new trams. The operating principle of the chopper technique is described in detail.
