A description of the infrared astronomical satellite IRAS, which was launched successfully on 26 January 1983, and the work that it will be carrying out. The satellite carries a telescope cooled with liquid helium to perform the first survey of the cosmos at far-infrared wavelengths (8-120 microns), and make special observations of selected astronomical sources. The survey will last about 7 months - the expected lifetime of the cryogenically-cooled telescope - during which it will produce an entirely new catalogue of infrared sources to extend greatly our knowledge of the relatively cool sources in the Universe.
