Electronic warfare is divided into three areas: electronic support measures (ESM); electronic counter measures (ECM); and electronic counter counter measures (ECCM). ESM is concerned with passive activities such as intercept, by which intelligence is gained; traffic analysis; and direction finding. It is the combination of the last two which is most feared because it enables the location of centres of communication (COMCENS) to be discovered and physically attacked. ECM are more active measures which normally follow the passive support activities and can once more be sub-divided into deception techniques, calculated to cause confusion, and jamming of various kinds to deny the enemy communications.
