The 'come back' of the trolleybus in France in 1975, as a result of energy shortages, has led to the modernisation of remaining parts of vehicles, the construction of new models and technological improvements of which the current chopper, the rheostat and dual propulsion are the most noteworthy. Berliet and CEM prepared the specification for ER100 that was to become the standard French trolleybus. Details are given of the tests carried out to assess the marketability of the vehicle. It was considered particularly suitable for countries without indigenous sources of fuel. Its advantage over the autobus is the elimination of noise, atmospheric pollution and low fuel consumption and cost.
