Coordination in direct support (CIDS) is the process for coordinating submarine operations in direct support of a battle group. As in any C3 situation, CIDS calls for providing the battle group commander and his staff with timely information about events at the force interaction interface, such as direct support submarine maneuvers and detection and attack upon enemy submarines. Because of the multi-dimensional nature of Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), communications among aircraft, surface ships and submarines are essential. In this process, the requirement for timely communication of the battle group commander's directives to the direct support submarine(s) is very important to mission success and BLUE (friendly force) submarine safety.
